I just read a wonderful op-ed article in the New York Times about a woman named Lisa Shannon who has devoted her life to help the women of the Congo. She is an amazing woman, who after watching an episode of Oprah on the war in Congo, immediately decided to do something to help. With the help of the international group Women for Women, she began to sponsor women in the Congo and she even began her own group Run for Congo Women which raising money for the Congo through races. What an amazing person! She gave up her company, her comfortable home, and even her fiance to help these wonderful women who have been through unimaginable trials and horrors. She seems like a really good person to look up to. She has used the blessings from her life in America- her education, her financial wealth, her freedom and rights as a woman to help her sisters in the Congo. I love that she calls them her sisters! Lisa talks about how the women in the Congo are such a wonderful, loving group. They do not have much, but whatever they have the share. They take in other children whose parents have been killed and raise them as their own. These women are wonderful examples of womanhood. They nurture, they care, and they rise above their trials. Lisa also talked about how the world has turned its back on the war in the Congo, a literal holocaust. Millions have been killed and millions of others have been maimed or raped. Lisa is also working with the government trying to get more funding and diplomatic efforts to try and stop the fighting in Congo. A little thing that we can do: write a letter to your congressperson.
